on poetry, knitting, and some really good YA.

In the last few days I have read the Sun is Also a Star and Everything Everything-they are so good. I loved them both, but I am still thinking about the ending of Everything Everything. I also read Sherman Alexie's memoir The Absolutly True Diary of a Part Time Indian, which was wondeful and reminded me a little bit of my former Journalism teacher, James Kristofic's memoir Navahos Wear Nikes. Both definitely worth reading. 

I also finished Bluets by Maggie Nelson in one excited burst. It is so beautiful. I have read other work by Nelson, but there was something about Bluets that was especially wonderful, I think it is maybe the format. Today I download Virginia Woolf's A Writer's Diary and Something in Between by Melissa De La Cruz (loving all of these YA novels about immigration, why do people constantly underestimate teenage girls and the writing directed towards them?). I also picked up Tupac's The Rose That Grew From Concrete, which I have been reading forever.

I am halfway through African Americans in Ghana by Kevin Gaines, so a comps reading post will follow, but I am also loving it. Lately, I have been thinking a lot about putting my work on Black Power and prisoner rights activism in a Diasporic context and Gaines does this beautifully. 

I turned in a writing project that has been hanging over my head, finished a draft of my journal article (which I am hoping to send off next week, before the semester gets going) and got into the SHA. I also bought supplies to start knitting, as I won't be taking an painting classes this semester and really want an activity. 

But anyway, gotta go finish a comp book (and read poetry instead of reading said comp book)
